Presenting about:

Ukraine in international relations in 1917-1918

Abstract:

My research interests are focused on the role of Ukraine in international relations in 1917-1918. I am researching the establishment of the first contacts of the newly created independent Ukrainian state - the Ukrainian National Republic - with European countries. Both relations with members of the opposing blocs in the First World War - the Entente and the Central Powers, and with neutral states (Norway, Sweden, Switzerland etc) are considered. Particular attention is paid to the relations of independent Ukraine with Germany and Austria-Hungary, their conclusion of the Brest Peace Treaty and joint military action against the Bolsheviks in Ukraine, in particular in the Crimea and Donetsk region. I study the issues of the German strategy towards Ukraine in 1918, the interaction of the political and military leadership of Ukraine and Germany. Among the problematic issues are German-Ukrainian relations regarding the status of the Crimean peninsula in 1918. Other research interests: • history of cultural relations between Ukraine and other European countries, • international relations in the Central and Eastern Europe since 1989, • Ukraine-EU relationship.
