Introducing Media Literacy Component into University Studies
Abstract: The research is dedicated to the question of heightened awareness of media literacy and the formation of skills necessary to identify manipulations, fakes, misinformation, advertising algorithms, cyber security, etc. Media Literacy becomes one of the most sufficient components of modern education all over the world, its development being supported by numerous international organizations and projects.
The authors of the research, Olha Ladyka and Oksana Yarema, as representatives of TNPU, have had experience in taking part in the number of seminars and projects promoted by IREX and ERASMUS+ in Ukraine since 2019. The experience gained gives possibilities for further research and presenting the results of implementing media literacy component to university studies.
The topic of Advertising and the tasks presented is a show-case of how English classes can be combined with Media Literacy pursuing the goals of language improvement and ML skills acquisition. Advertising can serve not only commercial purposes but has a number of features that should be detected by a consumer in order to avoid direct manipulation. A set of exercises shows how ML component can be easily integrated in the class and develop the holistic personality of a student.
