Presenting about:

Searching forms and meanings in the church painting of the west of Ukraine in 1900 – 1930’s

Abstract: In the face of the horrific russian war in Ukraine the global community suddenly saw a striking difference between Ukraine and Russia. Despite the fact that we are neighbors, Ukraine has its evident distinction from Russian culture and art. The proposed presentation will help to acquaint the audience with the peculiarities of the development and changes in church art of the early twentieth century in the west of Ukraine. This topic is a part of a large-scale scientific project designed by the Department of Art History at the Ethnology Institute, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine to form a database and interpret this art. This is especially relevant today, when not only peaceful social life, but also the entire material and cultural heritage of Ukraine is under the threatening of destruction.
