Presenting about:
Decorative and applied art of Hmong (Miao) ethnic group in China as a tool for preserving ethnic identity and cultural patterns of the ethnos.
Abstract: The research covers the unique historical and cultural phenomenon - the use of decorative and applied arts, including embroidery and jewelry, as a tool for preserving the mythology, culture, and history of the Hmong (Miao) ethnic group in their millennial migration from historical, political and cultural pressures of other dominant nation in the absence of writing system. Analyzing the changes in household art and the correspondence of these changes to the oral epic of the Hmong (Miao) people, the author uses an ethnographic model of cultural patterns, the change of which allows reconstructing the events of the historical past in the absence of written sources. The Hmong (Miao) ethnic group has been divided into a large number of tribes with their own languages, history, and household principles, but the commonality of their cultural patterns, including mythical and heroic epics, symbolism in their art allows identifying these tribes as one ethnic group. The author gives examples of the emergence of new crafts and the constructive change in technology and materials in existing ones under the influence of changing lifestyles and certain historical events.
