Presenting about:

RESTORATION OF THE UNIQUE MEDIEVAL MURALS OF GORYANSKA ROTUNDA IN GORYANY (UZHHOROD, UKRAINE): THE PROBLEM OF OVERCOMING ERRORS USING POLYMERIC MATERIALS

Abstract:

The church in the suburbs of Uzhgorod, known in Central and Eastern Europe as the ""Goryanska Rotunda"", is a unique monument of medieval art. It is called a place of living history. Researchers believe that the Christian church in Goryany may have already existed in the XII-XIII centuries. Rotunda is famous for frescoes, which were created in 3 stages: the oldest image of the Romanesque art, XIV century murals in the presbytery of the Italian Proto-Renaissance, and the 15th-century Gothic nave. The Rotunda was under restoration several times from 1911. During the latest works in 1992-1994 restorers were using polymeric materials that are ineffective and give negatively affect the structure of the frescoes. Based on a range of tests, biological research, and studies of previous documents of the restoration of 1964-1996 we have developed a conservation project that would help eliminate these destructive areas and ensure that the frescoes are securely preserved. In particular, we suggested paying attention to the holistic study and preservation of monuments of national importance, including the study of the roof, walls, and interior.
